Complementary is my silent book that acts as a metaphor for feeling alone as a neurodivergent in a neurotypical environment.

My book is set in a world divided into personality types; rational, idealist, guardian and artisan. Each realm and its inhabitants are colour coded but the protagonist doesnt't fit into any, she is orange.

The story follows Orange on an adventure to find someone like her after seeing a flicker of orange disappear into the forest. However this light leads her to explore the other realms where she encounters obstacles along the way. With help from others in each realm Orange learns that she doesn't need to find someone identical to her, but rather finding different parts of herself in others is enough to realise that she belongs.

Character design is inspired by objects associated with each realms specialties. For example, the blue realm characters are inspired by laboratory beakers and mechanical pieces like clocks and circuit boards.

Environment design is inspired by nature and objects in the everyday. For example, The blue realm architecture is based on steampunk and hamster enclosures.
